Work-Study / Internship – Life Cycle Assessment Engineer

WeLOOP, a consulting and innovation firm founded in 2017 in the Hauts-de-France region, specialises in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Composed of 12 experts, our team assesses and optimises the environmental, social, and economic performance of products, services, and processes, using a life cycle approach. We support both public and private sector stakeholders in projects related to circular economy, innovation, eco-design, and life cycle management, from strategic definition to operational implementation.

WeLOOP actively contributes to the scientific advancement of life cycle management by investing in numerous R&D projects at the European level. As a Life Cycle Assessment Engineer, you will be involved in 3 European projects:

  1. MOXY: The MOXY project aims to develop a new green technology for contactless cleaning of cultural heritage assets, based on atomic oxygen to remove contaminants without contact, avoiding health or environmental concerns.
  2. CALIMERO: The CALIMERO project aims to improve current life cycle sustainability analysis methodologies for the bio-based industry, in order to identify and enhance the most impactful aspects.
  3. Bio4HUMAN: The Bio4HUMAN project aims to contribute to the identification of bio-based solutions for solid waste management that have the potential to be applicable in various humanitarian contexts.

Description of the work-study / internship offer

Start: ASAP

Duration: 6 months (internship) / 1 or 2 years (work-study)

Education: Bac +4/+5 (engineering school or master's degree) with a focus on environmental studies

Location: Lambersart, France

Salary: 1000€ gross monthly (internship) / According to legal framework (work-study)

Proposed tasks

  • Investigation and monitoring of various themes, for example, stakeholders in the value chain of atomic oxygen technology, cleaning strategies in the field of cultural heritage conservation, circularity strategies to address sustainability gaps in bio-based sectors, data sources and gaps for the application of circularity and criticality methodologies, bio-based system solutions for solid waste management (SWM), etc.
  • Environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) modelling for various products and services, including various circularity indicators, criticality indicators, plastic debris assessment, and dynamic climate change evaluation.
  • Evaluation of social indicators using a generic database and a methodology developed by the UNEP guidelines (S-LCA), as well as conducting comparative assessments.
  • Life cycle cost development, identification of relevant cost contributors and economic feasibility of different systems, for example, cleaning methods in cultural heritage, bio-based solutions for solid waste management in humanitarian aid, etc., as well as conducting comparative assessments.
  • Conducting critical reviews of various results (LCA, S-LCA, and LCC), performing sensitivity analyses and data quality assessments, to promote recommendations and guidelines.
  • Writing reports and scientific articles related to the projects.
  • Engagement with EU project partners during regular meetings.

Required skills

  • Basic knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and eco-design
  • Basic knowledge of Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC)
  • Experience with modelling using LCA software (SimaPro, Gabi, etc.)
  • Desired knowledge of materials and bioeconomy
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • Knowledge of the Office pack with advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Initiative and autonomy.
