Our participation at the conference Euromat 2021
Published on September 15, 2021
We are glad to present our contribution to the Euromat congress about materials science and technology. The aim is to enable knowledge transfer through the exchange of experiences between participants from universities and industries. This year, Euromat 2021 is organized by ASMET: the Austrian company for metallurgy and materials.
Our contribution to the congress
Our colleague Carolina Szablewski presents, for the occasion, the CEDaCI project, which aims to implement a circular economy within the data centre industry. The results obtained from the situational analyses of a circular economy in this field are thus presented.
Data centre are mainly concentrated in North-West Europe, especially in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and France. This equipment are replaced every 1 to 5 years, which significantly contributes to increasing electrical and electronic waste. In addition, this equipment contains many critical materials, and only 10% of those critical materials are recycled and recovered each year.
So, the project partners are working together on the possibility of integrating a circular economy in the data centre field. It would increase the recovery rate of critical raw materials and reduce their environmental impacts by reducing the use of virgin materials. It would also allow the development of a viable supply chain for these materials.
