Context: As part of the European Moxy project with numerous international partners (including art conservators and museums), the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of an innovative device, used for cultural heritage conservation, is being assessed.

Cultural heritage objects, such as statues and works of art, that are contaminated by organic materials (e.g., due to pollution, fires, or acts of vandalism) need to be cleaned, while traditional cleaning methods using organic solvents can damage the artwork and be toxic to the art conservator. The innovative technology developed within the framework of the Moxy project is based on the creation of atomic oxygen, which interacts with the organic contaminant.

An initial analysis of the environmental hotspots has been carried out, and the environmental performance of the device will be compared to other cleaning strategies through a life cycle assessment, which will be the main activity of the internship candidate.
