PlastiCity – Interreg

The 2 Seas region is one of the leading regions in the EU in terms of plastic waste production. It includes the North Sea and the Channel. In general, recycling rates of plastic waste are low (20 – 30%). The region includes many cities located near bodies of water, which causes an environmental risk, as a large amount of plastic marine debris is known to come from cities. The circular economy represents an economic opportunity for the region. In urban areas, a lot of plastic waste is technically available for recycling but is not recovered efficiently due to its quality for example. The tonnages are too low or the collection logistics are too complicated and the sorting facilities are not equipped.

The goal of the PlastiCity project is to develop strategies and solutions that are able to increase the recycling rate in the urban environment from 20-30% to 50% by unlocking the use of “lost plastics” as a secondary resource in the urban environment. The PlastiCity project analyzes the different actors in the region and the potential waste streams. It also allows the development and demonstration of new strategies and solutions to minimize waste and increase recycling rates of plastic waste.

Our contribution to the project

We contribute to the project through the realization of a Territorial Life Cycle Assessment (TLCA) and thus can test all the research done upstream on this methodology. While coordinating the project with the development of reprocessing strategies and the deployment of pilot projects, we develop CIN (contracts of national interest) territories with applications to the Douaisis level.
