SusCritMOOC
SusCritMOOC was launched in April 2020 as an extension of the successful project SusCritMat. The project aims to develop a massive open online course (MOOC) to educate PhD and master students as well as professionals on “Sustainable Management of Critical Raw Materials”. The MOOC addresses a wide spectrum of aspects around critical raw materials: raw material supply and demand, criticality concepts, economic and political conditions that influence supply security, environmental Life Cycle Assessment, and social assessment tools, the need for a transition towards a Circular Economy and its challenges, raw material exploration, certification, and the role of critical raw materials in Sustainable Development.
Virtual contents provided by the MOOC will be combined with live group learning experiences in summer and winter schools. As part of a “train-the-trainer” approach, teaching material will be offered to other educators that are encouraged to use and further expand the developed courses.
The MOOC will build on the training materials developed in SusCritMat and the experience of the project partners with MOOCs and other innovative and/or virtual learning formats, expanded with new insights from the current global health crisis. The course is planned to be available by October 2021.

SusCritMOOC is coordinated by ESM Foundation, Switzerland, and funded by EIT Raw Materials. EIT RawMaterials, initiated and funded by the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology), a body of the European Union, is the largest and strongest consortium in the raw materials sector worldwide. Its vision is to develop raw materials into a major strength for Europe. Its mission is to boost the competitiveness, growth, and attractiveness of the European raw materials sector via radical innovation, new educational approaches, and guided entrepreneurship.

Our contribution to the project
As Work Package leader of the “Solutions” track of the MOOC, we contribute to the coordination and review of the contents and alignment of courses developed by our project partners. We furthermore contribute to the development of courses focusing on Mitigating criticality, Certification, Environmental, and Social aspects.
