This expansion has been particularly driven by <strong>the growth of data centres<\/strong>, which process and store vast <strong>amounts of digital information<\/strong> and now support <strong>connectivity for a majority of the global population.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">At the same time, the speed and scale of this technological development have far exceeded <strong>the evolution of supporting systems<\/strong> such as recycling infrastructure and material recovery, creating <strong>increasing environmental pressure<\/strong> across the life cycle of electronic equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-5e84f705\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Where do environmental impacts really come from? <\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The environmental footprint of ICT devices arises largely from <strong>the energy required both to manufacture them<\/strong> and to operate them throughout their lifetime. This is particularly visible in <strong>infrastructure<\/strong> such as data centres, which alone account for a measurable share of <strong>global electricity consumption<\/strong> and <strong>associated emissions<\/strong> due to continuous operation and cooling requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-33cda8d1\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-nv-c-1-color\">Extraction of rare metals and critical raw materials&nbsp;<\/mark><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Beyond energy use, the extraction of rare and critical metals required for device production and the management of electronic waste also contribute substantially to <strong>the sector\u2019s total greenhouse gas emissions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Historically, many assessments have concentrated on the electricity consumed during device operation while paying less attention to <strong>emissions generated during the manufacturing of key components<\/strong> such as semiconductors, batteries, and display technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The results of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies can vary significantly depending on methodological choices, assumptions about extraction and manufacturing processes, and how researchers define <strong>the completeness of the available data.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental impacts associated with ICT products vary greatly from one study to another, particularly because <strong>the impacts of electronic components are not consistently represented in the available databases.<\/strong> <strong>les impacts des composants \u00e9lectroniques ne sont pas for electronics rely on <strong>fragmented and poorly harmonised information sources.<\/strong> Most of the environmental data currently used for digital technologies still originates from a foundational study in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Many later studies extend this dataset <strong>mathematically rather than updating the empirical evidence.<\/strong> As a consequence, environmental results for ICT products may appear precise while still containing large uncertainty, particularly when examined at the level of individual components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f396cff3\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-nv-c-1-color\">A lack of data on electronic components&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/mark><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This limitation becomes more significant because <strong>modern electronics<\/strong> consist of <strong>complex assemblies<\/strong> made from numerous materials and highly specialised production processes, meaning that the real challenge often lies deeper in the material and manufacturing layers of electronics production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reinforces the need to update <strong>life cycle inventory datasets for electronic components<\/strong> so that environmental assessments better reflect <strong>current technologies.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-comment-l-ingenierie-inverse-permet-de-mesurer-les-materiaux-electroniques\">How reverse engineering allows the measurement of electronic materials ? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>One direct way to address the lack of detailed inventory data is to <strong>physically deconstruct electronic components<\/strong> and <strong>characterise their material composition through laboratory analysis.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/en\/projet-cedaci\/\" target=\"_self\">CEDaCI project<\/a>, this approach was applied to data centre equipment by systematically dismantling components such as hard disk drives into distinct sub-streams (e.g., chassis, disk, permanent magnet, printed circuit board, and motor), followed by <strong>mass quantification of each fraction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image aligncenter uagb-block-c13ddfba wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-center\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" <strong>elemental analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This workflow allows the reconstruction of <strong>detailed material compositions<\/strong> for components that are otherwise treated as aggregated \u201cblack boxes\u201d in conventional LCI datasets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Crucially, it improves <strong>material quantification within LCI by replacing generic or proxy-based assumptions with measured mass fractions and elemental concentrations<\/strong>, thereby increasing the <strong>granularity, accuracy, and transparency of inventory data at the component level.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By linking these empirical measurements with inventory modelling, the approach provides a pathway to generate <strong>more reliable and component-specific datasets<\/strong>, which are essential for improving the It extends the same analytical framework to a broader range of ICT components, including silicon wafers and their derivatives, hard disk drives, screens, electronic boards, and optical sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The project carries out a <strong>systematic review of manufacturing processes and technologies<\/strong>, where <strong>process parameters are translated into parameterised life cycle inventory datasets.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within this framework, <strong>WeLOOP contributes by supporting the project and collaborating with TND<\/strong>, as in the CEDaCI project, to generate <strong>accurate material composition data across different products within the same component family<\/strong>. These <strong>empirically derived material compositions are then integrated into the parameterised life cycle inventory models<\/strong> developed within the project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-d665f3a4\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>From reporting to digital product passports<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Improving <strong>LCI quality<\/strong> has <strong>direct implications for sustainability reporting, regulatory compliance, and product development.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Accurate and detailed material inventories enable <strong>more robust LCA<\/strong>, supporting <strong>environmental reporting frameworks and corporate sustainability strategies<\/strong> while also informing <strong>ecodesign decisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This is particularly relevant in <strong>the context of emerging European regulations<\/strong> such as the <strong>Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation<\/strong>, where tools like <strong>Digital Product Passports require transparent and reliable product-level environmental data across the value chain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A precise quantification of materials also makes it possible to more clearly identify environmental \u201chotspots\u201d, particularly those related to critical raw materials, by analyzing their distribution and contribution within components and processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Such granularity allows stakeholders to prioritise interventions in design, sourcing, and end-of-life strategies. As regulatory and industrial demands for traceability increase, <strong>improving LCI through more precise and empirically grounded data becomes essential<\/strong> for enabling <strong>consistent, comparable, and decision-relevant environmental assessments of ICT products.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div characterisation with inventory modelling, LCA shifts from <strong>a static assessment tool to a practical design instrument<\/strong>, supporting <strong>circular design approaches<\/strong> and
