has-text-align-center\"><strong>MDIP Project \u2013 Marine Debris Impacts of Plastics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-nv-c-1-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-nv-c-1-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-site-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Why initiate the MDIP project?<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">WeLOOP launched the <strong>MDIP project<\/strong> (<em>Marine Debris Impacts of Plastics<\/em>) in 2020 to address the growing environmental issue of <strong>marine debris and its impact on marine ecosystems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The project aims to <strong>address the limitations of the current LCA methodology<\/strong> by accurately quantifying the plastic waste released into the environment throughout the <strong>life cycle<\/strong> of a product, based on the development of an <strong>operational method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><span style=\"color: var(--nv-text-color)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Plastics, ubiquitous in our daily lives in various forms and uses, have become crucial, but they also pose an <strong>increasing threat to the environment<\/strong>. The oceans are particularly affected by plastic pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">A <strong>considerable amount of plastics are released into the oceans<\/strong> through various sources and channels, and over time, plastics can degrade and break down into smaller pieces. These plastic debris are classified as <strong>macroplastics<\/strong> (fragments larger than 5 mm) and <strong>microplastics<\/strong> (fragments smaller than 5 mm).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook-1024x577.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4147\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7805383022774328;width:734px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook-1024x577.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook-1536x865.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Couverture-Facebook.png 1640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-site-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">What are the current methodologies?<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">So far, <strong>different alternative approaches<\/strong> and numerous scientists have been studying plastic waste at the end of its life cycle and its impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The gap in assessing plastic leakage within the framework of an LCA aims to be addressed by the methodological guidelines known as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/quantis.com\/who-we-guide\/our-impact\/sustainability-initiatives\/plastic-leak-project\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\">Plastic Leak Project<\/a><\/strong>. These guidelines focus on an inventory of plastic emissions related to textiles (textile washing), transport (tyre abrasion), pellet pollution, and plastic products and packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">On the other hand, the impacts of plastics of different sizes (nano, micro, macro) in various environmental compartments (air, terrestrial, freshwater, and marine) are addressed by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ciraig.org\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\">CIRAIG<\/a><\/strong> using the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marilca.org\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\">MarILCA<\/a><\/strong> framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In addition, characterisation factors for the physical effects on biota were developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jiec.13269\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Corella-Puertas et al.<\/strong><\/a> in 2022 for three different scenarios, including sedimentation, degradation, and fragmentation rates, for emissions of expanded polystyrene (EPS) microplastics and tyre and road wear particles (TRWP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-site-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">What new methodology are we proposing?<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Although these methods allow for the <strong>assessment of potential characterisation factors<\/strong> by considering the fate, effects, and exposure factors of plastics in the marine environment, implementing an operational methodology using this approach could require significant development time. The unpredictability associated with the <strong>pathways of plastics<\/strong> in the marine environment remains a <strong>major uncertainty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><br>WeLOOP considers plastic leakage starting from its <strong>production<\/strong>, using a fate-factor approach. <strong>We assign responsibility for potential leakage to those who bring the product to market<\/strong>, thereby holding them accountable for the associated environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The methodology <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-nv-c-1-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-nv-c-1-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-text-dark-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">How does this methodology work?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><br>To ensure the proper functioning of this methodology, WeLOOP has developed a <strong>multi-criteria analysis<\/strong> using a set of parameters derived from the plastic value chain (Figure No. 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">To <strong>differentiate macroplastics from microplastics<\/strong>, this analysis associates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">the <strong>type of plastic<\/strong> (HDPE, PP, LDPE, PET, PS, PUR, PVC, EPS, PA6, PA66, PA11\/12)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">its <strong>sector<\/strong> (packaging; construction and building; automotive; electrical and electronics; household, leisure and sports; agriculture; textiles)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">its <strong>size<\/strong> (&gt; 5 mm or &lt; 5 mm)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Image1-1024x814.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4148\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.257985257985258;width:435px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Image1-1024x814.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Image1-300x238.png 300w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Image1-768x610.png 768w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Image1-15x12.png 15w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Image1.png 1232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour l&rsquo;<strong>inventaire et la caract\u00e9risation<\/strong>, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 possible d&rsquo;identifier des<strong> facteurs de caract\u00e9risation (FC)<\/strong> sp\u00e9cifiques \u00e0 la taille du plastique. Chaque FC est influenc\u00e9 par diff\u00e9rents param\u00e8tres qui interagissent entre eux pour <strong>d\u00e9terminer l&rsquo;impact global.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">For example, for macroplastics, the <strong>use context<\/strong> plays an important role in the effectiveness of collection and treatment. In contrast, for microplastics, the release potential takes into account the <strong>probability of plastic loss<\/strong> during the use and maintenance of the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Regionalisation and standardisation steps<\/strong> have been introduced to <strong>improve the effectiveness of impact assessment<\/strong>, using plastic leakage values and total plastic consumption by country or region. Different types of <strong>polymers<\/strong> have been compared and analysed using this method to assess their respective impacts expressed in PET equivalents and to standardise the <strong>plastic footprint<\/strong> of the various polymers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The integration of these factors into <strong>SimaPro<\/strong>, a Life Cycle Assessment software, is underway. So far, the implementation for the packaging sector has been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-text-dark-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">What are the results?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">WeLOOP has calculated <strong>2310 characterisation factors (CF)<\/strong> for the 11 most commonly used polymers across 7 sectors and in 15 regions or countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">We have implemented two new impact categories in SimaPro, called <strong>Plastic Leakage Potential for macroplastics<\/strong> and <strong>Plastic Leakage Potential for microplastics<\/strong>, alongside the existing modelling of the LCA impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">We also conducted an <strong>LCA on various test cases<\/strong> involving the comparison of different types of packaging for milk and meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-site-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">What's next?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The implementation of the <strong>7 other sectors<\/strong> (construction and building; automotive; electrical and electronics; household, leisure and sports; agriculture; textiles) to <strong>quantify and test the impact of plastics<\/strong> at the company and product level, both food and non-food, is underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>development of a normalisation and weighting value<\/strong> is underway, which will allow the calculation of a <strong>single score<\/strong> for a product. This assessment will help us understand the environmental impacts of <strong>plastic losses throughout the different life cycle stages<\/strong> by linking with <strong>inventory data<\/strong> on
