has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">WeLOOP collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/cyvigroup.org\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\"><strong>CyVi<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/scorelca.org\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\"><strong>ScoreLCA<\/strong><\/a> on a project focusing on <strong>carbon capture techniques<\/strong> and its utilisation or storage (Carbon Capture, Use and Storage), as well as the <strong>methodological challenges<\/strong> these techniques pose in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/fr\/acv\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\">Life Cycle Assessment<\/a><\/strong> (LCA), both for policymakers and for companies and LCA practitioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Interviews<\/strong> were conducted with 10 experts on CCUS from various countries and sectors (industry, research, public institutions\u2026) to gain a <strong>comprehensive understanding of CCUS<\/strong> as it is practised today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>What is CCUS?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">CCUS refers to <strong>the set of techniques that prevent CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions or remove CO<sub>2<\/sub> from the atmosphere<\/strong>, followed by the utilisation or storage of carbon in various forms. CCUS will be essential to achieving <strong>carbon neutrality<\/strong>. After maximising the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, residual emissions will need to be stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Only <strong>natural capture<\/strong> is currently used on a large scale through <strong>afforestation and reforestation<\/strong>, but the current global trend is towards <strong>deforestation<\/strong>. This trend still needs to be reversed to achieve a net sink effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Many barriers still need to be overcome before the <strong>large-scale implementation of CCUS technologies<\/strong>, but it is important to start considering their deployment now, as solutions already exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Missions for ScoreLCA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">This is a <strong>pioneering effort<\/strong>, as these technologies are still not widely available on the market, and <strong>LCA practitioners<\/strong> lack experience in this area. LCA is especially crucial in this field because studies often focus solely on <strong>greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong>, increasing the risk of impact transfer to other categories (e.g., mineral resource use, water use, ecotoxicity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"756\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image1-article-score-LCA.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4694\" style=\"width:624px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image1-article-score-LCA.png 756w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image1-article-score-LCA-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image1-article-score-LCA-18x9.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">We have conducted <strong>a state-of-the-art review of the available solutions<\/strong> currently, from capture to storage or utilisation of CO<sub>2<\/sub>, and developed a classification system. <strong>Capture is distinguished into two categories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Natural capture<\/strong>: It does not require energy input and generates complex molecules, such as cellulose, for example.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Technological capture<\/strong>: It requires an energy input and produces CO<sub>2<\/sub> in a pure form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image2-1024x760.png\" alt=\"captage\" class=\"wp-image-4695\" style=\"width:771px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image2-1024x760.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image2-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image2-768x570.png 768w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image2-16x12.png 16w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image2.png 1384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><br>The diagram above presents the summary of our work on the <strong>classification of CCU\/S technologies<\/strong>, with <strong>the storage timelines<\/strong> for the different outcomes of carbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">They cover all <strong>potential applications or forms in which carbon is stored<\/strong> (for example, the \"living biomass\" category includes annual plants and trees that can live for over 100 years). The <strong>gradients<\/strong> indicate the <strong>potential variability in storage duration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><strong>Methodological challenges<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The major challenges for the LCA of CCU\/S are the <strong>valuation of storage temporality<\/strong> and the <strong>allocation of impacts<\/strong> between the actors capturing CO<sub>2<\/sub> and those using it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">How can wood wool, which stores wood for 50 years, be rewarded when wood energy releases CO<sub>2<\/sub> directly? Who should benefit from the credits associated with the use of CO<sub>2<\/sub>? Other questions remain, particularly regarding how to handle the status of carbon and how to classify the flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-text-dark-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>Handling multifunctionality<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">We have proposed a new hybrid method to <strong>allocate impacts between the producer and the user of CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The proposed <strong>\"Offer\/Demand\" hybrid method<\/strong> aims to be fair, easy to implement, and designed to encourage the adoption of the most effective solutions, while freeing itself from dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>impacts and benefits of capture<\/strong> are calculated through a <strong>system boundary extension<\/strong> with the substitution of the process generating CO<sub>2<\/sub>, and then they are allocated between the main product and CO<sub>2<\/sub> based on a <strong>politically determined allocation factor<\/strong> to align with the carbon neutrality agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"921\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4696\" style=\"width:699px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image3.png 921w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image3-300x106.png 300w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image3-768x272.png 768w, https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Image3-18x6.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 921px) 100vw, 921px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--nv-site-bg);background-color: var(--nv-secondary-accent)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Temporality<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">We compared the <strong>calculation results<\/strong> between different products using four methodologies and standards: ILCD, PEF, EN15804 A2, and ISO14040\/14044.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>case studies<\/strong> were conducted on second-generation biodiesel (produced from wood and straw), wood pellets, wood wool (with two possible end-of-life scenarios, incineration or landfill), to <strong>compare the storage associated with different uses<\/strong>, and finally, on various types of cement to compare the geological storage of the same product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Three different types of cement were used<\/strong>: CEM I cement, modelled in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoinvent.org\/\" class=\"ek-link\" target=\"_self\">Ecoinvent<\/a><\/strong>, and two cements where carbon is captured and then stored. For <strong>PEF and EN15804<\/strong>, there is almost no variation between the different products, as storage is not considered.
