The aim is to <strong>harmonise calculations across Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">However, applying this 50-year period to specific construction products, such as thermal insulation, raises several <strong>technical and methodological questions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rsl-et-esl-concepts-clairs-et-application-complexe\">RSL and ESL: straightforward concepts, challenging application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>Reference Service Life (RSL)<\/strong> corresponds to the expected lifespan of a product, component or system <strong>under defined service conditions<\/strong>. It serves as a <strong>baseline reference<\/strong> and is not intended to predict actual performance in all situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>Estimated Service Life (ESL)<\/strong>, on the other hand, aims to reflect <strong>actual service conditions<\/strong> and can be calculated as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default has-custom-1-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-nv-c-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cdf570976c32cc531c3f7621888feaa8 wp-block-paragraph\">ESL=RSL\u00d7A\u00d7B\u00d7C\u00d7\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Factors A, B, C\u2026 include <strong>design quality, material quality, workmanship, exposure, maintenance, and use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Although the concept is well established, notably through the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/45798.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISO 15686<\/a><\/strong> series, its application remains complex. For example, insulation installed in Munich will not be exposed to the same conditions as in Brussels. Yet, <strong>the impact of this difference on ESL calculation is not always clear<\/strong>, and its application varies across assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-50-ans-pour-l-isolation-thermique-realite-technique-ou-convention\">50 years for thermal insulation: technical reality or convention?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Compared to other building elements such as <strong>interior finishes, roofing, or windows<\/strong>, which often have shorter RSLs, thermal insulation is <strong>typically associated with a <strong>reference service life<\/strong> of 50 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-custom-1-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">But does this value correspond to <strong>proven durability under all conditions<\/strong>, or a <strong>conventional reference<\/strong>, aligned with the EPBD study period?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In practice, insulation is rarely replaced. It is <strong>often retained and supplemented with new layers<\/strong> during renovations. This demonstrates a <strong>long service life under favourable conditions<\/strong>, but raises the question: should we always <strong>assume no replacement over 50 years<\/strong>, or does this assumption oversimplify actual practices?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cadre-reglementaire-vers-un-alignement-europeen\">Regulatory framework: towards European alignment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\" id=\"h-\">At the EU level, RSL is becoming <strong>a key characteristic for assessing environmental performance<\/strong>, with links between <strong>ESPR \u2192 CPR \u2192 EPBD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Within the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/en\/fdes-vs-cpr-la-fin-des-declarations-nationales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Construction Products Regulation (CPR)<\/a><\/strong>, RSL appears as <strong>the default value in the Environmental Product Performance Declaration<\/strong> (DoPC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The EPBD recommends using data from the <strong>Construction Framework (CF)<\/strong> developed under the CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter class=\"translation-block\">these data are not yet <strong>complete<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Consistency between products and EPD operators<\/strong> is still under development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\" id=\"h-\">This creates <strong>uncertainties<\/strong>, especially when different EPDs use <strong>different RSL assumptions<\/strong> for similar products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-les-c-pcr-opportunite-et-limites\">c-PCRs: opportunities and limitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\" id=\"h-\">Future <strong>Construction Product Category Rules<\/strong> (<strong>c-PCRs<\/strong>) for producing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) could allow RSLs greater than 50 years, if <strong>justified by tests, specific product evidence, or clearly defined essential characteristics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, several questions remain open:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Which tests can <strong>justify an extended RSL<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">How can <strong>ageing mechanisms<\/strong> be taken into account?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">How can <strong>realistic and harmonised service conditions<\/strong> be defined?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\" id=\"h-\">The <strong>draft Standardisation Requests (SReq)<\/strong> highlight these challenges and call for clear technical and functional conditions, transparent links between RSL and essential performance, and explicit rules for ageing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">While the 50-year reference period is used to <strong>harmonise calculations<\/strong>, some Member States define <strong>longer building lifespans<\/strong>, sometimes up to 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-custom-1-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">This raises methodological questions: should the RSL of products always <strong>follow the reference period<\/strong>? How should <strong>highly durable or uncertain<\/strong> products be treated in extended assessments? Answers are not yet fully established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-la-duree-de-vie-de-reference-n-est-pas-une-prediction\">Reference service life is not a prediction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-neve-link-hover-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\" id=\"h-\">RSL should be seen as <strong>a working basis<\/strong>, not as an exact prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">ESL remains the responsibility of the <strong>specifier<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">RSL provides <strong>a common starting point for environmental declarations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For thermal insulation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The <strong>50-year RSL is generally reasonable<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">It <strong>does not guarantee the exact service life<\/strong> and does not set a <strong>strict technical limit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\" id=\"h-\">It reflects <strong>the current state of harmonisation, available data, and the regulatory framework<\/strong>, while leaving <strong>room for adjustments<\/strong> as c-PCRs evolve and field experience accumulates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-secondary\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weloop.org\/en\/building-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Discover our expertise in the building sector<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La dur\u00e9e de vie de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence (RSL) : comment elle influence les r\u00e9sultats environnementaux Naeem Adibi Dans le cadre de la Directive sur la performance \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique des b\u00e2timents (EPBD), une p\u00e9riode de dur\u00e9e de vie de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence de 50 ans est utilis\u00e9e pour \u00e9valuer l\u2019impact environnemental et \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique d\u2019un b\u00e2timent.
