Aqualicious
« The AQUALICIOUS project aims to accelerate the development of a more sustainable, diversified and circular European aquaculture sector by demonstrating the potential of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and low-trophic-level species. »

Aquaculture is a key sector in addressing food security, environmental and climate challenges. However, in Europe, it remains largely dominated by high-trophic-level species, which can generate environmental pressures related to resource use, nutrient waste and dependence on feed derived from wild-caught fish.
The AQUALICIOUS project aims to test and optimise new, more sustainable aquaculture production systems based on the co-culture of complementary species: omnivorous fish, shellfish, molluscs and algae. These solutions will be tested at three demonstration sites in Norway, Belgium and Spain to assess their technical, environmental and socio-economic performance.

Our contribution
As part of the AQUALICIOUS project, WeLOOP is responsible for assessing the environmental performance of the solutions developed, particularly through Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) applied to aquaculture co-production systems.
Our role is to collect and structure data throughout the project, covering everything from infrastructure and materials to operations, production outputs, processing and distribution. WeLOOP will also contribute to identifying environmental hotspots, integrating biodiversity and ecosystem service considerations, and developing eco-design recommendations, best practices and policy guidance.
