Evolution of the EN 15804 Standard

The EN 15804 standard, titled "Sustainability of construction works – Environmental product declarations – Core rules for the product category of construction products," serves as the product category rules for developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), also known in France as Environmental and Health Declaration Sheets (FDES).

Revised every five years, the EN 15804 standard was updated at the European level with the addition of a second amendment, EN 15804+A2, in November 2019, which became mandatory by October 2022 in European Union countries. In France, this amendment (NF EN 15804+A2) was published in October 2022, along with a national supplement (NF EN 15804+A2/CN).

THE LIFE CYCLE PHASES

The end-of-life phase must be included in all environmental declarations, covering modules C1-4 as well as module D, which were optional in the EN 15804+A1 standard. The only exception applies to "strong>Cradle-to-gate" declarations, with or without options. However, the following conditions must be met:

1. The product or material must be physically integrated into other products during installation, making it impossible to separate them physically at the end of life.
2. The product or material is no longer identifiable at the end of life due to physical and chemical transformations. 
3. The product or material does not contain biogenic carbon.

Based on the inclusion or exclusion of life cycle phases, it is possible to have 5 different types of Environmental Product Declarations, namely:

• Cradle-to-gate with modules C1-C4 and module D 
• Cradle-to-gate with options and modules C1-C4 and module D 
• Cradle-to-grave with module D 
• Cradle-to-gate
• Cradle-to-gate with options

CHANGES IN THE LIST OF INDICATORS

With the new A2 amendment, additional environmental impact indicators are included in the declaration, namely:

• Fine particulate matter emissions 
• Ionising radiation, human health 
• Freshwater ecotoxicity 
• Human toxicity, cancer effects 
• Human toxicity, non-cancer effects 
• Impacts related to land use/Soil quality

Additionally, some indicators previously included in the older amendment are now calculated using different methodologies or have revised titles:

LE CARBONE BIOGENIQUE ET LE CONTENU CARBONE

Plus d’informations sont demandées en ce qui concerne le contenu carbone des produits et des emballages :

• La méthodologie pour le calcul de l’indicateur changement climatique – biogénique détaille les modules où les captages et émissions doivent être déclarés.
• La norme EN 16 449 concernant le bois et produits en bois doit être utilisée pour le calcul du contenu de carbone biogénique pour ces produits.
• La compensation carbone est toujours interdite dans le calcul de l’indicateur d’impact changement climatique.
• L’effet d’un stockage temporaire, ainsi que d’une émission retardée, ne doivent pas être pris en compte dans le calcul de l’indicateur de changement climatique.

LA QUALITE DES DONNEES

Des exigences ont été définies pour la qualité des données utilisées lors d’une déclaration environnementale produit, principalement en ce qui concerne le format de données en ILCD (International Life Cycle Data System).

L’analyse de qualité de données doit être présenté dans le rapport, et doit contenir au moins les éléments de qualité géographique, technologique et temporel.
